Most of the people who visit my website do so because they are suffering pain. They want relief or wish to manage their condition better. Others wish to improve their general health through a regular maintenance programme. My goal is to assist them to the best of my ability.

In particular they will want to know where I trained, how experienced I am and whether I am competent! So I hope the following background information is helpful and not too onerous!

Professionally, I am qualified to practice Physiotherapy, Acupuncture and Manipulative therapy. I am registered with the Health Professions Council as a physiotherapist; hold an Acupuncture Masters qualification with the College of Traditional Acupuncture, Warwick, that followed 10 years training, postgraduate study in China and research; and also belong to the British Medical Acupuncture Society. I have been practicing in healthcare since 1990 and estimate that I have carried out over 100,000 acupuncture needling procedures.

Careerwise, I have worked privately, in a GP run practice, in health centres in the UK and in hospitals, rehabilitation centres and teaching clinics abroad. I have been honoured to work for The Princes Trust and then directly under the instruction of HRH The Prince of Wales himself. In 2004 I was given personal and written commendation by His Royal Highness, for my contribution to the integration of Western and Complementary Medicine.

Teaching wise, I have taught to degree level in the U.K and abroad; an associate teacher with Oxford Brookes University and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In 2005 I became a faculty member of the College of Traditional Acupuncture, Warwick, where I lectured in clinical skills and worked as an assessor and a moderator until 2008.

My personal visions have always been to provide low cost treatment for all and to help those individuals suffering chronic pain to be able to self manage their conditions. This has led me into voluntary work and setting up self help schemes. After the Asian tsunami, I set up a small charity, Physiotherapy Volunteers Overseas, to teach low cost, basic physiotherapy and acupuncture in under resourced areas. My contribution will never be enough, but I hope I have been able to pass on some of my skills to students and professionals in Mongolia, Indonesia, Honduras, Burma, Thailand and India. I have met some remarkably dedicated individuals and have been proud to represent the Anglican Church as well as the Buddhist organisation Vipassana and report to the Human Rights Organisation FED. Most of this work has been self funded with some help and lots of encouragement from patients and friends and lots of patience from my family!

Currently, in the UK, as well as my existing work, I am developing, what, I believe is 'The way ahead' for acupuncture professionals. The Self or Home Acupuncture scheme, where selected patients, or their carers, are taught to perform simple acupuncture safely at home. I am currently the only practitioner in East Anglia qualified to operate this scheme that is endorsed by the BMAcS and I truly believe that taught responsibly, this can be safe, effective and self empowering to those in chronic pain.

I hope you enjoy my website and if I can answer any questions about your condition, or about my work, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Richard Graham.
